Hey Yawl.
Yes I know, I have been MIA. Blame it on my job. lol! Okay, Apologies!
Today I'm going to put you guys through on what a pre-poo is all about and good news.....I HAVE A VIDEO!!! yayy!
Remember all the wash day steps I talked about in my last post?
- Pre-poo
- Detangling
- Shampoo/co wash
- Protein treatment (optional)
- Deep moisture treatment
- Leave-In treatment
- Style
I will be breaking down these steps one by and today I am focusing on the first step, the PRE-POO. Without further ado, let us head on to that.
What is a pre-poo?
A pre-poo is basically any treatment that you do before you wash your hair. It is actually coined from the words "pre-shampoo", meaning what you do before you shampoo your hair
What is the purpose of doing a pre-poo?
A pre-poo is done for various reasons but the most important ones are
- To prevent protein loss
- To prevent hygral fatigue
Hygral fatigue is a case where your hair gets damaged by the constant expansion and contraction of your hair strands during the washing and drying process. I explained more on that in my video.
What do we use to pre-poo?
A pre-poo treatment can be done basically with heated oils. Coconut oil, olive oil, castor oil, essential oils, sesame oil, mustard oil, almond oil or whatever oils that you have at hand. However, do try to use these oils in their virgin form and do not use too much. Its not how much you use that makes a product effective but by how you use whatever it is that you use.
Also you can use a protein conditioner, actually any conditioner is better than none. As one of the reasons of a pre-poo treatment is to prevent loss of protein from the hair, giving your hair a fortifying protein dose before wash is just perfect.
How should I apply my pre-poo?
Always apply in sections. This is the best way to make sure your treatment reaches all parts of your hair. For oils, mix up in a dropper bottle. Then place the bottle in a cut of water to let it heat up fro about 3 mins. For conditioners and other treatments, you do not need to heat up. When you are done, cover up your hair with a plastic bag or saran wrap or even a shower cap. (although I prefer disposable bags so that I don't have to bother about washing the mess from my shower cap) On top of this, tie your hair with a scarf. This cause your hair to steam up with the heat produced and the product penetrates your hair better.
Also remember to be gentle on your hair.
How long should I leave in the pre-poo treatment?
The treatment should stay in your hair for at least 3 hours, or possibly even overnight (for a non-protein treatment)
This gives it enough time to get its work done on your hair.
So that's basically all there is to the pre-poo.
I will be talking more on it in my video and I will also show you my favorite pre-poo recipe. lets go check it out in the link below.
Peace, Love, Happy Fro
